Commuting and Creating Tomorrow

Commuters travel toward an office on one side; on the other, a person and an AI work around drawings. A two-part image shown with its original Japanese caption and signature.

Words in the artwork

“We’ve arrived at work. The work hasn’t started.”

The original Japanese artwork is shown unchanged.

A morning queue being carried along, and a desk where people and AI gather around drawings. Through these two scenes, the work considers the difference between completing a schedule and creating change. It brings creativity closer to small, tangible moments in everyday work.

Looking at the work

On the left, people carrying bags travel in the same direction. Beneath them is something like a conveyor belt; ahead are a clock and an entrance marked “OFFICE.” On the right, a person and a robot gather around drawings at a desk. The two scenes, in navy and ochre, show different ways for a working day to begin.

The caption, “We’ve arrived at work. The work hasn’t started,” puts a small interruption into a familiar morning. Arriving at an agreed time and meeting in the same place each have their roles. Yet doing those things alone does not tell us what we have brought into being that day.

The people on the left are not standing still. The queue moves forward and its destination is clear. Still, their aligned figures and moving platform suggest little room to reconsider the purpose of the work for themselves. Filling a day with travel and appointments is not the same as bringing about a needed change.

At the desk on the right, the person and robot face drawings and a building model. Outside the window are a city and a crane. What is considered on paper can connect to a place where someone will spend their life. Seen that way, work expands beyond units in a schedule into an activity that can shape how people live.

Of course, putting AI at a bright desk does not automatically create a better tomorrow. Recognizing a need, developing ideas, and checking what has been made all remain necessary. This can be read as one moment in a process where people bring experience and hopes, and use AI’s help to move an idea toward something tangible.

A texture like a well-used print gives a scene of future tools the warmth of familiar work. Creativity need not mean constructing a large building. Changing one routine or easing someone’s difficulty a little can matter too. With those small outcomes in mind, the boundary between the two scenes begins to appear within our own day.
